I have put together an addendum to Blender Basics Part 3 to address a few feedback items I received from Blender Underground operatives. I thought about revising Part 3, and I also considered adding a section to the beginning of Part 4. What I settled on was producing a brief supplement to Part 3 itself. You can download it here.
Many thanks to Agent DaveC, who took the time to go through the tutorial and make several key observations. Although he thought his feedback might be interpreted as criticism, it was greatly appreciated, and was the main impetus behind this addition to the Blender Basics collection…
I also want to extend deep thanks to chapel and to MrHorner, who posted comments illuminating the difference between Median Point and Bounding Box pivot modes, the illustration of which were added to the beginning of this supplement.
Here’s a breakdown of the contents:
- Pivot mode: Bounding Box – 01:12
- Make Edge/Face – 04:48
- Loopcut and Subdivide Multi – 08:37
- Select Linked Geometry – 11:14
American Heritage Dictionary defines supplement as:
- Something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency, or extend or strengthen the whole.
- A section added to a book or document to give further information or to correct errors.

Good job on the supplement. There was one other thing I noticed in part 3, but it was very basic and solvable.
Around 1:09:10-1:09:22 you said “I’m going to grab the top loop, grab it on Z, and bring it down just a tad, .1 or .2″ but your leftscreen indicator said .01-.02.

Well, I’m not the only one who goes above and beyond, am I?
You took the comments, researched them and added every necessary piece of information.
Well done, sir. Very well done.

Duke, thanks! I think I know the one you’re talking about, I didn’t notice until I was adding overlays so I decided to leave it, figuring people would be accustomed to checking the indicator. Yes, very solvable! Good eye…er…ear…
Dave, you’re a class act my man. 8)

Great addition to the last tutorial. That trick with loop cut is going to be very helpful.
By the way I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on a rather large project I am attempting with Blender. I am planning to use Blender to produce a sci-fi web comic but having no background in 3d modeling and having only been using blender for a few weeks I’m not sure if its going to work. So what do you guys think, good idea or pipe dream?
August 23rd, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Coyabbit,
I definitely think Blender is up to the task, but what you’re talking about is, no question, a lot of work.
However with Blender’s modeling capabilities, its rigging and animation tools, and its nodes and compositing functionality, I think the pieces are all there. With a good graphics program, i.e., GIMP or Photoshop (whatever you’re most comfortable with) I think you’re in business.
None of this is effortless, but it’s all doable.
What a fantastic project that could be. Once you had your characters modeled, textured, and rigged, action-posing them in comic-style frames for 2D output would be simple (not effort wise, just rocket-science wise).
You might want to do some searches on BlenderNation as there are probably articles posted that can give you insights.

Thanks Apollos!
Its good to know that I’m not crazy for attempting this.

@Coyabbit:
Hey, nobody said you’re not crazy!
Good luck with it and let me know if I can help in any way.

You mentioned the scroll wheel to add to the number of loop cuts when using CTRL+R. For those who may not have a scroll (for what ever reason) you can also type in a value on the numpad…
CTRL + R For loop cut
press 5 on the numpad to make 5 cuts.

Ah, good info, thanks. Blender’s so cool like that.

I haven’t watched Blender Basics 3 yet, but I just wanted to say great job Apollos. Keep up the good work!
August 24th, 2007 at 7:31 am
Can you post these to Google Video or youtube? Or post smaller, slightly lower resolution files?
August 24th, 2007 at 8:02 am
fool:
Apollos could do it, but you couldn’t recognise or even saw what’s happing in it, because of the bad quality… And Youtube has 100MB and 10m limit and the resolution of the uploaded vidio is changed to 320×240. I don’t know what about google video, but I guess, it isn’t diferent at all (YouTube is powered by Google). You can check out what quality would have the part 3, by searching “Blender Basics” at youtube.

Thank you, Apollos. Again I learned a lot.

teasel, thanks I will! Don’t forget the Part 3 supplement.
fool, Parts 1 and 2 are available on Google video, Metacafe, and Viddler. Just search for Blender Basics. I haven’t been able to post part 3 yet, or 3s. The quality, as Wizek points out, is quite awful. I might try to upload higher res versions on Viddler, but the others will all downsample.
saebelzahnigel, you’re very welcome. Keep it up with blenderguide.org!
August 24th, 2007 at 11:32 am
Google Video shows the image in a large size but I guess the resolution is still poor. I was hoping Google Video used a higher resolution.
August 24th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
fool, me too. I uploaded to Google video at 800×600, and it down sampled drastically. I will try and get a higher res version on Viddler as soon as I can. Apparently they don’t down res so much.
August 24th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
Lol, thanks DaveC. I guess it does help being a little crazy.
DukeProtocol, thanks for the link. That a really cool effect.
August 24th, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Fool:
Apollos just notified me that he uploaded part 2 to Viddler. It’s the same quality as the one available for download.
August 27th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
Well done Appolos
Gotta hang out more here

Hey Dragonlord, Long time!
Thanks! Come by any old time, it’s a good group here. Hope all is well…

On “select linked geometry” to get linked geometry from selected you have to press CTRL-L. Just L gets linked geometry from where the mouse pointer is, like Apollos said.
September 9th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
This is correct, I just checked it out. Pressing L checks the pointer, CTRL+L checks selected. Thanks Duke!
I wish I understood that better before I did Part 3
September 9th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Apollos, thank you very much! this are the best video tutorials I have seen about Blender, Congratulations!

When I try to download the avi file but it keeps asking me to log in but it doesn’t accept my login info and besides that, I’m already logged in.
There might be a problem. The other video are great and I thank you so much for the work you did.

Many thanks and I am loving the videos.

Bob if it makes you feel better, you’re not the only one!
I’ve considered making the text blink, rotate, and change colors.
