Recording for Part 4 was completed late last night. I’ll be editing the video in Premier Pro today, and most likely getting on with all the post tasks as well (titles, transitions, overlays) which are done in After Effects…

I could very well be uploading on Saturday.

This was a difficult tutorial to record. I’m not sure why. The script is around 6,000 words; and while there are fewer “techniques” introduced, the concepts of Objects and Data are fairly well covered. I think most of my difficulty was fiddling with the OOPS schematic. It seems to suffer a few shortcomings which make it awkward. I’d love to see it reach the maturity of the Node editor, allowing the dynamic linking of data right from the OOPS window.

Here’s the outline in advance:

- The Outliner
- Mesh Data
- OOPS Schematic
- Linked Duplicates
- Multiple Scenes

This tutorial is a sideline from modeling. However it is a necessary step, and I think most will appreciate it, because it will bring beginners closer to understanding how Blender handles things; and will demystify some difficult aspects of the interface. This will help assure a smoother transition into more difficult concepts, sure to be encountered down the road.

Looking forward to it! As well as a tutorial on materials and textures (part 5 perhaps?).

Good work with these video tutorials btw… they really help “glue” together all the books and articles I’ve read on Blender (Blender Guide 2.3, ICAB, Essential Blender).

    picartj, welcome to Blender Underground!

Thanks. I find it interesting that the tutorials are helpful even for those who have used other materials.

BTW the plan for Part 5 is materials; and if it fits, basic UV mapping. After that I still need to cover more nuts and bolts, and lighting and rendering. I think basic object animation might even be in order to round out the basics series. That still leaves things like curves with no place to fit right now. I’ll sort it all out somehow.

I’m quite certain it will be invaluable and expertly made. As always. Bring it on!!

I’m quite looking forward to Blender Basics Part Zed.

I’m sure you’re not alone in wanting Part 4 to be about materials. I expect others to express some level of disappointment until they’re finished working through the Part 4 broadcast.

When trying to teach the use of an application from the ground up, at some point the viewer needs to be familiarized with some of the mechanics, to make learning more advanced features of the program easier. I decided this segment would best be presented before materials, because materials is a big subject and is likely to cause some confusion (for myself as well as others.) ;-)

I’m glad you’re looking forward to Part 4; I’m looking forward to finishing it and working toward Part 5, which will finally bring the long-awaited materials tutorial!

Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comments, they are appreciated.

Smash, as soon as Saturday evening, but it could be Sunday depending on circumstances!

There’s enough UV mapping tutorials allready, what these tuts really need to do, is, as picartj said, “to “glue” together all the books and articles”. (that’s a difficult sentence!)

    Apollos, Duke,

I have just noticed that I am using version 244.1 (green box on menu bar).

I can select and move any item in the Oops window. Pressing the A key in the Oops window deselects the item. I don’t have to go anywhere near the 3d view to do anything. In fact when doing a shift space in the Oops window I just don’t need the 3D view.

With nothing selected, repeated pressing the A key in the Oops window selects and deselects all items.

Am I doing something wrong or have they bug fixed something here.

  11. Apollos says

Reynard, that’s exactly it. It’s a bug that’s fixed with 2.45. You must have a build with the bug fixed. The way you describe it is the way I expected it to work. WHYYYYYY!!!!! :D
