Panther Cannon Walker

The above model was created by Blender Underground Agent Coyabbit, and was impressive enough that I wanted to share it with the blog. We’ve been following its progress for some time on the forums. Coyabbit has been a BU regular for some time and he frequently shares his work, but this one I wanted to feature because its coolness rating is off the charts. I asked some questions about it and he was kind enough to answer…

———————

Apollos: What inspired you to build a machine like this?

Coyabbit: A very active imagination and old table top RPG games….it is originally from an old Shadowrun RPG game me and my friends use to play. As a reward for a mission my character got a weapon called the Panther Cannon. My character then hired a Rigger to build a drone to mount it on. Since learning Blender I was finially able to build the drone the way I had always imagined it.

Apollos: How long did this take to get to this point?

Coyabbit: I didn’t keep track of the hours I spent working on it but if i had to guess I would say at least 80 hours. As for Blender and working with 3D in general, I’ve only been doing this for 6 months.

Apollos: Are you planning future improvements to the rig, mesh, or materials?

Coyabbit: To me this project will never be finished. As I learn new skills and tricks I will continue to update and refine it.

Apollos: Was this a learning process for you?

Coyabbit: Oh yes! This was a huge learning experience for me. This project gave me the incentive to learn and because of its complexity there was a lot to learn in building it.

Apollos: What are some projects you’d like to do in the future?

Coyabbit: I spent a lot of time playing table top rpgs like Shadowrun, Dungeons and Dragons, Rifts, so I have plenty of material for new projects. If I had to decide on a specific project I want to work on next I would say Mech of some kind.

Apollos: What additional Blender skills would you like to develop going forward?

Coyabbit: One word, Organic. I have discovered I have no skill in making living things and thats something I would like to change.

Apollos: Anything else you want to add about this project?

Coyabbit: Only that I had a lot of fun doing it and I can’t wait to get started on my next one.

This model is fully rigged and articulates quite well. It’s also animated. If you want to check out the blend file, it’s posted below.

Fantastic work, Coyabbit. Everything about it looks right from the modeling to the texturing and the animation that I’ve seen. Brilliant.

  2. Coyabbit says

Thanks Dave!, that means a lot coming from you. I’ve seen your work its very impressive.

Wow, and that’s the result of 6 months with Blender - from tin can to drone, Very Impressive! Did you find the learning curve steep?

  4. Apollos says

Moz, I’ll try to answer for Coyabbit: I think that this model employed so many elements that it represents a steep learning curve, but with a huge payoff as far as learning Blender’s ins and outs (and what-have-yous).

All the joints in the model articulate properly — the hydraulics all articulate as expected, with the use of constraints; the hoses employ curves, with their vertices “hooked” to the frame, joints, and limbs for proper movement; it’s rigged and IK driven for the leg motion; it has an animated walk cycle, and makes use of a particle system. I’m probably leaving something out. ;-)

    It’s really quite a thing! :o

Jimmie likes the Panther Cannon Walker!!! But it also scares Jimmie a little bit…

  6. the_real_jimmie says

    Who is this “Jimmie” character?

  7. Coyabbit says

Thank you Apollos! Yes I would say this had a very steep leaning curve but for me that is the best way for me to learn. I tried to take advantage of everything Blender had to offer. I even used Material Nodes on a few parts. But I do want to point out that this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Apollos and the rest of the Blender Underground. So thank you to everyone that helped make this happen!

Will the real Jimmie please stand up.

  8. Apollos says

Apparently we have dueling Jimmies at Blender Underground. Who would’ve guessed?

  9. penix1 says

Could it be a dual personality? That would be a scary thought.

Can someone point me to the thread of the forum where this was being discussed please? Was there a work in progress thread, I really like them?

I did a forum search but came up blank, it says at the top of the article “We’ve been following its progress for some time on the forums” so there must be somthing on there about it.

    Thanks
