I’ve been toying with Blender’s particle system and this is what I came up with. It makes use of dupliverts and xsort, and a wind effector.

UPDATE: I added another version of the effect…

For this version I used a more complex height map for the mesh, with a stipple pattern to keep certain elements on screen longer.

    Nice!

That’s a really cool effect. If you ever use it in your videos, you might want to make it go faster… it’s a bit long for a logo… else awesome stuff you got there :D

    Thanks Kemeros!

Yep, it’s too long for a splash screen. When I get something I really like I might shorten it up.

I think it too cool. It will really good if you do shorten it a bit. But hey, you’re the artist. Make it as you wish.

The second one is even better imo. It’s clearer and has a nice feel to it. I presume you can do this with any background image?

And for the speed… you can always just speed up the sequence like when you fast forward a movie…. That way you don’t need to go play in a bunch of settings…

This logo makes me think of some game studio logo.. can’t remember which though… but it’s awesome too…

    Number one: Excellent
    Number two: Excellenter
Brilliant effect and a cool logo to boot. Nice one, Apollos.

    Oh! That’s way cool Appolos!

@Kemeros, I like the second one too, and yep, you can use any gray scale (ish) image for displacement.

@Dave, thanks! I’ve been having fun with the system. Some of these techniques are not obvious at first. In these cases, I used a displace modifier then sorted the vertices with Xsort. The particle system reads the order of the vertices when generating particles.

@caricc, thank you much, and I agree with you and Kemeros, it’s a bit long, but I was more interested in getting the effect right than with timing. If I ever use it in a splash screen or something, it’ll need to be less than 10 seconds.

@Paco, glad you like it! I posted a couple more experiments in my Youtube channel.

That is sweeeeet! I would also recommend this right before logging off of you tutorials. I still love your intro but think your exit needs to be this nifty… 8)

penix, it’s not a bad idea! I was also thinking it could serve as a splash for the shorter focused video tuts if I get around to doing them. :D

Just joined Underground today and am downloading all the blender basics tuts. I think the effect you created here is really great. Have you done a tutorial on this effect and if not will you?
I’m still at the beginner stage and am looking for any help and tuts I can get my little paws on.

Keep up the great work, I know everyone appreciates it.

Hi Nipper, and welcome to Blender Underground 8)

Thanks! I haven’t done a tutorial on this, but I might in the future. It was made with the old particle system (< 2.46) but I suspect it’s more than possible to create the effect in the new one. I just haven’t learned how to use it yet.
