I have been over on the dark side playing with DAZ Studio 3 and Blender. It does a pretty good job of exporting to Wavefront Obj format but sucks at Collada. It screws up the armature and mesh placement pretty bad. Wavefront doesn't have an armature of course so the pose is static.

DAZ can export to Collada (although it is pretty crappy) Wavefront and a surprize BVH! I haven't done that yet but intend to give it a whirl once I figure out how to animate in DAZ.....

It can import poser files as well as use poser figures. Again, I haven't tried that but we will see if I ever get a poser figure... :P

You can find DAZ here:

http://www.daz3d.com/

It does require registration to get a serial number but that isn't too bad.

Another pose, different hair color:

[EDIT2]

Last pose for now. :D

I think they came out rather well. DAZ is what MakeHuman should aspire to be more like. It is difficult to work with their interface though. It has a strange way to translate objects and isn't intuitive at all. That's OK because Blender has all the tools I need for it. :D

Well done.
I have Daz and Poser 5 but I've never been very keen on it. It seems to be very slow on my computer.
The interface is a bit arcane somehow . . . . . .
What version of Poser are you using ?

Me?!?! Poser...BWAAAHAAAHAAA...*caugh...Splutter*...

No, I don't own Poser at all. The only reason I have DAZ was I saw an ad for it and it is somewhat free and wanted to check it out. I even had to go to the dark side to do it (Windows)....

I got a discount copy, from a magazine I think. The trouble is they try to lock you into buying content (models etc. ) through and from them.
I like creating my own originals, hence Blender (which also does much more in one rather than 2 or 3).

I do have a dual boot here but haven't been in Windows in over 8 months. It took 3 hours just to update the silly thing. The resources it sucks up is tremendous with all the crap that you have to run when you are in Windows just to be safe (anti virus, firewall, antispyware, etc. etc. ad nausea). To me, that is wasted resources that you never get back. Add to it the fact that every one of those programs are constantly using the Internet for their updates (OS included) and your modem is constantly in use to the point where people come to expect modem activity as a norm instead of as an oddity. It's little wonder people don't realize when they are infected when legit programs hog the bandwidth like they do.

So yes, for me Windows is the dark side...

@Penix1. I'd been wondering about trying Daz; did you find it relatively easy to learn, say in comparison with Blender?

No Charlie. It's interface is horrid to put it mildly. It is very good for acting like MakeHuman using WaveFront. The Collada export really stinks though. Either the Blender import is screwing up or the Collada export is. I tend to believe it is the exporter. The textures are easy but do need tweaking in Blender (mainly turning on "NORGB" for transparent elements). On my second free figure (Aiko) the seams from the UV show through. I haven't figured out yet how to hide them. It is noticeable on closeup views. Also, Blender imports the WaveFront with specular set high. I dropped them all to zero.

All-in-all it isn't as bad as MakeHuman but isn't there yet for interface controls. Blender is way more intuitive for controlling the character / scene / camera angles than DAZ is.

I have added complexity because I am doing the Blender work in Linux which means I have to gather all the UV images and hand edit the .mtl file to point in the right place for them. Once it finds them, everything falls into place.

I guess to really answer your question, yes DAZ is better than MakeHuman for Blender imports but it is like MakeHuman in that the stand-alone DAZ needs work. Oh, and it's render engine isn't as good as Blender Internal either. Of course, I went with the defaults so YMMV on that one.

I'll post Aiko later today after the board update.

Yeah, we know you and Goliath are kinky that way. If I were either of you, I'd give up on the virtual dates. They never work out right.... :P

Penix, all I want out of a woman is a supermodel with a 160 IQ who owns a beer factory. Seems like a modest dream to me...

Well here is Aiko. She is one of the "freebies" DAZ Studio gives out. Nothing like Anime....
