Pressing the B key once will put you in Border Select mode, where you can draw a box around your selections.

Pressing the B key TWICE will put you in Paint Select Mode (actually called Circle Select).

While Painting selections, do the following:
    - LMB to Select with the brush
    - MMB to Deselect with the brush
    - MOUSE WHEEL to change the size of the brush
    - And don't forget the Limit Selection to Visible button, which will allow you to block out back-facing selections if you have the need.

With Paint Select Mode, you can paint your selections like Picasso.

I want to repeat this so that I understand it. You are saying that a double "B" key allows you to "paint" the selection area right? I can see where this functionality would come in handy especially for multi-material faces. Keep in mind, until Sunday I don't have access to Blender. Does it work the same in Linux as in Windows?

penix1, that's exactly it! Double B puts you in paint select mode, and it's just like painting on a canvas except you're painting selections on or off. And I'm almost certain that it's the same in linux.

Sounds like the 3D withdrawals are getting pretty bad. :D

I wish to echo this so that I accept it. You are adage that a bifold "B" key allows you to "paint" the alternative breadth right? I can see area this functionality would appear in accessible abnormally for multi-material faces. Keep in mind, until Sunday I don't accept admission to Blender.

Using the left mouse button you can draw gestures.

A line = Move selection
An arc/circle = rotate selection
An arrow/spiral = Scale

I prefer G R S though.

Thats cool, I didn't know that. I am not sure that I understand the "An arrow/spiral = Scale" - it doesn't make sense to me.

Do you just mean like swirling the mouse? like a tornado kinda?

Well, it doesn't matter too much now, because it's a feature that isn't in 2.5

I think I may have got the spiral bit wrong, it might just be an arrow that works.

By arrow I mean
>
kinda symbol.

Are you using blender 2.5 ?

if so, than it might be the first, the second and the third reason why nothing works fine.
