Hi guys,

I am writing this post in response to Ninja's post in my sword complete thread :D

@Ninja, I agree that there are some questionable models on TS. However if TS started filtering what was and wasn't suitable you could end up with a very draconian system. Hopefully buyers will be able to discern a good model from a bad one.

When selling a model there is a lot to consider beforehand, however I would keep it simple. Apply modifiers such as mirror first, export in a stable format such as .obj and avoid Blenders internal textures. Unwrap your models and texture them in GIMP, this is a good way to ensure your textures export well.

When saving your files, put them in individual zip folders, one for your item and a read-me and one for all your textures. Adding your original GIMP/PS files is a good idea, however such files can be very big. A potential customer might not want to wait for such large files to download. Such files would be useful though and maybe they could be included in another zip folder and added as a separate download. That way buyers will have a choice. As Ninja says, include accurate info. Don't do a vert count with sub-surf on.

If you want to sell your models go for it, have confidence in your work, however be objective and realistic. It takes time to develop your skills and if you believe your work needs improvement, spend time refining your modelling techniques. However a good model dosen't need to be highly detailed with photo-realistic textures. For me a good model is one that is well designed, has a clean mesh and good topology and is well textured. Build on those qualities and you wont have any problems.

Look I'm not saying they should. I'm just letting people be aware that the problem exist, also you don't always get the model shown in the render Sample images.... These users are however quickly found and promptly removed from the system.

Hi Ninja,

I agree, if you are selling an item it should have a correct and accurate product description, otherwise it's false advertising. Like you said, if you are selling a model, describe it accurately and don't mislead buyers. When selling you will be building a reputation for yourself, protect it!

...2) I notice that you have made some {models}for sale: does it make much cash?
I'm asking because I wonder whether it is worth the effort doing stuff like that myself.
3) I see a lot of 3DS max and Maya files for sale, does the fact it's made in Blender affect your sales?
Does that even come into it ?
4)From my own quick experiments the OBJ export in Blender looks pretty good - but not having Max or Maya or something like that I can't tell for sure.

...2) it's all relative. It doesn't give me as much as I would like, but it's a nice bit of bling on your paypal account which you can use for online purchases. It's all in the size of your offering. The more you have, the more you sell. I don't know if it's 'worth' it, but I enjoy creating things in blender, and I figure I might as well capitalize on that while I'm at it.
3) Most general models would be made in xMax, or similar, but there's no problem with using blender to create your things. I don't think any of my sale items have any materials in them. That's because blender's won't export into 3DsMax, or vice versa. They're all app specific.
4) Yes, blender's .obj exporter is top notch. Just make sure you export 'high quality normals' and 'groups', that way your models come out with separate objects. Don't ever use the .3ds exporter because it doesn't preserve UVs, it triangulates your mesh, and randomly reshuffles vertice positions. LWO seems to work fine, but if you already have obj, you don't need anything else because it's the best.

Hope that answers some of your questions!

Thanks all of you for the tips and advice, this is great stuff. One day I'm gonna stumble across all the renders I did as a kid, remodel them and sell them for tons!

You are right that T3DS doesn't get quite the traffic TS does, but I'm am I correct in my assumption that you are stating this based on free downloads? I used to have a free model or two available for download, but have since removed them as I realized they weren't very good quality. If I remember correctly, TS did get more downloads. But I have a theory about all this. No proof, just hypothesillizing :). I believe that T3DS get's a more serious, professional audience on the consumer end of things whereas TS get everyone. (How many kids-just-starting-blender have you seen download freebies from TS? Quite a few here.) I have not made quite as many sales on T3DS as on TS, but total royalties have more on T3DS. For me, and I'm sure you would all agree, income is more important than sales.

Another reason to avoid TS is a boycott sort of strategy. It's my hopes that T3DS will get more popular, as TS sinks into more humble grounds.

Here's an interesting read. Yes, it was written by T3DS so take with a bit of salt, but it does shed light on some interesting things.

Oh, and 'the scammers' they're referring to is actually TurboSquid but I think they can't mention them directly because of legal reasons.

Thanks to you specifically, that article definitely helped me out, as a newb to this kinda thing I was actually willing to take 40% from TurboSquid, not knowing that I could receive 40% more from T3DS. Sure TurboSquid gets more publicity, but probably not all that much more. Just searching 'Buy 3d Resources' Shows that. The very first link is T3DS, with TurboSquid under it.

I must mention that I was surprised that this thread had one site name in it's title: a bit un-democratic.

Well, the name TurboSquid comes to mind easier than T3DS, I have to admit that I'd never heard of them until today. Does anyone know which site has been around longer?

Ssen, The3dStudio has been online longer than turbosquid, by about a half a year.

So it's possible that TurboSquid was a copycat from the start?

I just took a look at The3DStudio website.
I found it confusing to say the least:
1. I cannot find where to sell my models on their site despite repeated attempts.
I do get a big list of other sites to try - but I could have done that myself already.
2. When I am logged in there is no logout or worse still, it just logs me out when i move to another page - it's impossible to tell.
Navigation via Firefox is also confusing since the menus end up floating away from their anchorpoints.
I have already asked them about some of this stuff but I'm not holding my breath.
No, I'm not gonna go to Turbosquid either for now.

Anyone else got a Model selling site they can recommend ?

nit-ity, pickity pickity but the title is still biased because there are many more stores than just T3dS and TS.
Falling Pixel is a good one that comes to mind.
