Way back when in the dark days of single thread computers, there was a sand timer or a watch or something that told you that your program was busy doing something. This suggested that you should maybe NOT press all those extra buttons or level 4 subsurf your mesh Right Now.

I suspect that the absence of some sort of busy indicator in Blender has caused me much trouble already: Materials face groups and modifiers sometimes take a moment to do their thing but Blender doesn't TELL you it's busy, so being a mere human I might try to do something else, and it goes wrong or just doesn't work at all.

You may never run into this problem simply because your computer is so much faster than mine, but that's not the issue: they always will vary in capabilities, and as features get added and your models get more complex, it will slow down. Count on it.

Okay, maybe I'd settle for improving the Material face groups. Maybe.

I wait for Blender 2.5.
