I'm working on a ship that has a fantail at the stern and here's a link to a screencap:

I don't know if this is possible or even if blender already has it, but if it's possible I'd like a sort of a "venetian blind" type extrusion function that would let you take one edge of an opening you've booleaned or cut into a solid and extrude it along the edge, following it until it seals up at the other edge, making a smooth, solid skin over the opening.

I know that sometimes what seems simple is impossible to do and what seems hard turns out to be easy in the perverse world of sofrware, so maybe this can't be done but hey, this is a WISH list, right?

You can do this, but it can be tricky.

Extrude both sides of the gap in a bit, be sure to lock them to the right axis.

Next, select the verts on the new edges, and go to scale. Lock the scale axis to that which you are extruding on. Scale to 0.

Next, 'remove doubles'

You should now have a closed gap, as if it was done in one go by your "venetian blind" extruder. So long as I'm understanding you right?
