UV Face Select mode might very well be a welcome omission from the latest Blender SVN. Although there were some useful features in that mode (ALT right click for Seam Marking) I think it's better the way it is.

Edit mode is the new Face Select mode. Since I often worked in Edit mode for UV faces anyway, this is going to be a welcome change, I think. The U key is still the unwrap menu, but now I'm not fiddling with an extra mode to unwrap faces.

How does it work? In a separate pane, choose the UV/Image editor. TAB into edit mode for your model, mark your seams with CTRL+E, select all faces, and press U for the Unwrap menu. It all still works, and no extra "mode."

And all this after I spent all that time trying to get skin on my MakeHuman model! One version too early! :D

Strange...

I just updated and we are already up to 13376. Looks like the renderer and particle system again in this one.

Another change is the new (to SVN anyway) mesh->Empty Mesh script. this creates an empty mesh for those that like to CTRL-L-Click to add verts. No more adding a plane and deleting all but one point anymore. WhooHoo! I hated adding the plane method.

You won't miss it, that's the great thing. Everything will work the same for the most part, but no special "mode" for selecting faces. :D

sorry for bringing up an old thread But I'm trying to move onto 2.48a from 2.43. i love how you can see texture in edit mode now. what is killing me is one little feature. In 2.43 I used to go to edit mode and mark a seam of an area then goto UV mode and click on a UV in that area and then Swlect-Linked Faces (Ctrl+L) and it would highlight/select al UVs only in the cut off area. Now in 2.48a it doesn't have that. It has the same select->linked vertices but it ignores the seams and selects the rest of the object (select vertices did that in 2.43).

I tried spliting and separating the vertices of the marked seam but still no luck. Anyone have any help on how I can get this feature back or replicate it a different way?

Thanks

Well, I don't seem to have any problem selecting areas of a mesh defined within marked seams with CTRL+L in 2.48.

Have you also tried using the SHIFT+G option in edit mode? If you are in Face select mode it gives you a menu to choose similar faces by the currently selected material, normal direction, perimeter or area etc. I find that this gives me more control and options.

Thanks, but I don't think you understood my problem. I work on leadergeads for a game. So lets say I want to select only the part of the arm below the elbow. Now the forearm has some 100 faces. What I would do in 2.43 was just create a seam at the elbow point. All the way around the circumference of the arm. Then in UV face mode I would select 1 face below the seam I created and then do Ctrl+L in UV mode and it would only highlight below the elbow.

When I do this in 2.48a it highlight everything above and below the elbow.

Ctrl+G is great but it still requires me to highliht everything first. what I did in 2.43 was save time by only clicking a few vertices, mark the seam, and click 1 face. faster than click 100 or so faces or do the unpredicatvle grow select option.

thanks for the help.

Okay, I understand you but I still don't get why you have this problem.

So, I created a simple cylinder mesh and set an edge as a seam dividing the upper and lower half of the cylinder.....

Image

I have all faces selected in Edit mode, then key 'U' to Unwrap. I then see my faces all flattened on the UV window. So I select one face for the lower half of my cylinder in the UV window and key CTRL+L to select all linked vertices under where my seam is. It worked okay for me so I'm not sure how you're unable to do it.

Have you checked that 'Sync UV with Mesh option' is OFF?

ekmek, I'm not sure I entirely understand either, but I'll assume for the sake of argument that you want to select mesh verts/faces and not UVs.

As Charlie pointed out, CTRL+L works great in the UV window, for selecting linked UVs, but you do need to have all the physical geometry selected.

If you were able to use UV face select mode as a shortcut for selecting mesh verts, that functionality is probably gone now.

However there is a workaround. Select your edge loop around the arm, press V to Rip, and immediately press ESC. You've just separated the geometry without deforming it. Keep in mind there are two vertex loops where one used to be. Select a face (or vertex) below the loop and press CTRL+L. You'll have a selection that doesn't go beyond your loop.

Just remember that you'll need to "remove doubles" at some point to restore the loop that the Rip tool duplicated. If you need to work with those selections frequently, I would recommend making a vertex group.

Once again, this assumes that you're trying to make mesh geometry selections, and not actually UV selections.

thx for the help guys. I think where I was confusing you is that I was using the 2.43 UV select mode not just for texturing, but when I would do my seam and select linked faces I would then either delete, or resize the mesh, or any other model work. It was a quick way to manipulate a large group of faces.

I think I found a work around now. In edit mode I have selected the faces of the elbowand then did vertices->split then selected linked vertices. If I just do the vertices it doesn't work so I guess I have to faces with it.

thx for the help. Let me know if there is an easier way.

[Dare I do this...? XO]
I haven't given up - really I haven't, but after two hours of experimenting to try to find out how to unwrap without getting a lot of weirdness in my uv/image editor screen, I've dug myself in deep enough to realise I actually need help here.
I THINK I've looked everywhere I can, but seem to be just going round in circles now, apart from getting distracted by a lot of cool stuff I really shouldn't be trying yet. :?
I'm new to everything about this (a week or so?), and still going through the 'hammering stuff into my brain' stage.
I'm starting with the default cube; edit mode; not really sure whether I should be selecting vertices, edges, or faces; pressing CTRL E, with a UV ed. window already up; selecting all faces (face mode for that?); pressing U......

*shakes head to clear nightmare uv shapes away*
I think my UV ed. window extends into another dimension, and I'm getting someone ELSE'S unwrapped object!
I've closed Blender, re-opened, even done a complete restart - several times - and get a definite non-cube unwrap.
It is never the same shape, either.
P.S. I'm not doing anything special, just trying to work through a tutorial from the .org site

[No, I darent, but I did anyway. Sorry for the baby question, guys  ]
