I just tried to join the IRC channel but I realise that I don't know the first thing about IRC:

I'm being asked for a chat server, and my IRC client has a list of them.
Which one is BU on?

Put it right into the chat box. Often a client will have a way to do it in the UI, but the command is often to easiest and fastest way to do it.

An easy way to get into the IRC channel is to use this online client. Here's what you need to enter into the fields:
Nick: that's your username. Make sure it's something rather unique.
Channels: "#blenderunderground" (WITH the Pound symbol, without quotes)
Auth to services: unchecked
CAPTCHA, enter the CAPTCHA into the box below it.

Finally hit connect. Wait for a second until the tech rubbish clears, and then you're good to go.

Here are some commands that you might find useful. All of these are entered directly into the chatbox, leave no space in front of the command.

/join {Room ID} (for instance /join #blenderdev)
/nick {NewNick} (changes your nick(name). for instance: /nick radialronnie01)
/ping {username} (pings a character. useful if you think you or they lagged out. For instance: /ping RadialRonnie)
/msg {username} (opens a private chat with that person. (I think they need to be online for that))
/help (Provides a complete list of commands, prepare to be confused if you're new)

Indeed, that's a pretty pretty cool website you got there radialronnie.

But for the defence of installed irc, (Ychat more specially), you have all your chats that are automatically saved on your pc helping you to get info you might have forgot without having to ask the same questions periodically.

Yeah, I use Pidgin here, I prefer it to any web interface that I've seen, but usually those are really easy to get up and running with, hence my reference to it.
