Hi Melina,
First, it depends on how much you already know about Blender, I'm guessing that you are pretty new to it though.
You really need to know how to get around in Blender and it doesn't happen instantly: there is a lot to learn, especially if you have not done 3D before.

You could try the Basics Tutorial Videos made by Apollos, Owner of this forum here: http://blenderunderground.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3450
they are not current for Blender 2.6x but most of what they say has not changed.
If that's too simple for you or you have some other problems, get back to me here - or someone else might be able to help.

I suggest that you only need create one shape, basically a tube that goes through a 90 degree bend with straight lengths either end , then adjust it and duplicate that using an array modifier to string it into one "thread" of the braid, then duplicate the whole thing for the other(s).

You will also need a "hair" texture and transparency map to get the braid looking really hairy - if you look at the freebies on Renderosity.com you should find a hair texture or two for Poser/DAZ hair props that would do the trick with a bit of butchering.

Hope this helps !
