I love movies. Something with good solid story telling. Be it a campy zombie movie, A sappy chick flick, a gruesome slasher flick, or a Post Apocalyptic such is the case with The Book of Eli. It's been 30+ years since the human race burned our sky in a horrific war, water is hidden gold, your next meal often times are few and far between. And lets not talk about the wastelanders out there willing to cut your neck open just to have at least a meal or two more.

This is the world of Eli, A simple man, one of the few left who ever remember the world before the sky and all else was burned. what makes this man so special however is the depth and conviction of his faith. A faith so powerful, He will end your life if you even remotely pose a threat to what it is he carries. As you may have guessed He carries a book with him. One of a few left, maybe even the only one left like it, in the whole world.

Now on a mission from the east to the west, Eli has spent the better part of 30 some years transporting, reading, praying and protecting his precious cargo. Now so close to the end of his Job like ordeal, the true test of his faith is about to come to a climax. He just has one more ruined town to pass through and it off to west coast.

What can I say, I like Denzel Washington and his awesome skills as an actor.

But what I like more about this film is what you don't notice till the very end. much more then that I really should not say.

Visually this is you standard Post Apoc Fair, Dust road, Overly bright days, depressingly void night. Sand in the air making it hazy, and the drab colored clothing for costumes. It a lot like a wild west film as well, loan stranger comes to town and the corrupt law man puts his nose in the strangers business antagonizing him after making the strangers offers and what not.

However this film has a sort of character and charm to it that I can't really deny. Making it stand out a bit more then just the average.

The performances from Washington and Kunis where spot on great, however Oldman I would have like to see better from, still with out fail he played the bad guy well.

it was a tight cast, with only a handful of any real names in the whole bunch, the rest being extra and the like.

It really an intelligently simple story if you want my opinion, and that fine in this case. It's a little preachy with good reason due to the subject matter but not overly so.

I have to say that I enjoyed this film. But now is the time to score it...

I giving The Book of Eli a 7 out of 10. It is simple and to the point, but it's lacking that powerhouse factor that really puts it over the top. It has fine actors giving fine performances, but it looks like a mad max film with a vastly bigger budget...

Still I'd recommend people see this one for them selves...

Be warned boss... It's not a friendly movie at time... doesn't make it a bad movie... just not all Unicorns and Pumpkin pie in the sky...

I understand. There's plenty of language and violence from what I can tell. (I've never been a big fan of pumpkin pie, nor unicorns for that matter.)

It's more the gratuitous violence and sexual content that I don't go in for. Torture porn (i.e., Saw XVII) and the lot doesn't do it for me. However I appreciate good story telling, or character-driven sorts of flicks. Sometimes violence is a part of the story. Another good movie with Denzel Washington was Man on Fire -- great story telling, good characters, but lots of violence; worthwhile overall message. (And some good soundtrack components).

I tend to judge movies on their artistic elements, starting with story and characters, and filtering in observations about cinematography, effects (where applicable), editing, continuity, and originality. Of course there are more elements worth considering (including the sanity of the writers and director) but I've never ruled a movie out just because it might contain some uncomfortable content -- such is life.
