I actually recreated it! Here is the blend for it:

http://blenderunderground.com/files/use ... omp102.zip

It uses both material nodes and composit nodes. It works in 2.47 so I don't think it is using anything special to SVN. I'm still looking for their "upgrade to the compositor" in the SVN but so far everything works the same in both versions. I was hoping to find an SVN only cheat but it is a no go to date which kinda ticked off both Damascus and Darth.....

Very interesting. It is simple, beautiful, and elegant

Well done.

It is a counterpoint to my mad scientist approach.

"A Leetle Biit a Here, and A Leetle Biit a There. Ooooooh, and I Vonder vhat Dis Does. AH--HAHAHAHA! Vonderul! Vondeful!"

Yes, there is something to be said for simplicity. Although the mad scientist route can be very enlightening to say the least.... :D

I liked your cheat! It was fun trying to solve the mystery. 8)

These aren't really serious competitions, afaict, so nothing wrong with having some fun. :o

I wasn't ticked off about the idea of cheating.. just the constant mentioning of it over and over and over... I was more "get on with it already" than upset...

dan_hin: heh, thanks.

That Z-buffer is amazingly twitchy. Extracting a usable image from it takes patience.

It was the constant reference to the 'cheat' that was annoying. But then, I'm sick... and have little tolerance. And I'm female. So there... :P

You forgot your node screencap Goliath. How do we know you didn't GIMP it without the screenshot.... :P

(Yes, that was said jokingly for the humor impaired)...

Ah....But the challenge was to do it without the external editors mainly to show that you don't need to go outside of Blender for that stuff.
