This challenge follows on from challenge 17 in that you can now texture your model you made. bear in mind you'll have to unwrap it first!

[EDIT] Goliath has informed me that as the winner of last weeks task he will make his model - in it's non-mapped form of course ;) - available for people who wish to compete in this challenge. Link to follow! [/EDIT]

So, grab your model of choice and let's get started. Once again you have a week to texture the model and then a further week to choose a winner....

There are no restrictions as to which program you use to texture the model...suffice to say that even MS Paint can do this job. It's also worth noting that Blender has an image editor too.

Good luck!

Dan

good work Goliath, I was about to point people - yet again - to my hideous UV mapping tutorial, which is currently hidden in a long rant about something entirely unconnected.

YEAAAHH !

My poor home's web connection is fixed.... for how long ? Maybe a question of seconds, so i'm writing this post as fast as I can though the connection seem to be less volatile than usual.

Folks, you are pretty lucky because, originally, my .blend was weighting around 20mb.... yeah, I know, there was lot of mess, but after reducing the file as low as possible, she was still weighting around 2.5mb.... But after compressed, It Is only a 250K FILE !!!

Also, my website host seem damn fast and after uploading my file to it, I tried downloading it as a guess and she got downloaded faster than it took me to target the download button.... (As a UT gamer, My targeting speed is fast enough to make you sigh a little "WOW"). Of course, I think this test worth absolutely nothing because i'm living In the same city from witch my host have his infrastructures....

SO !, here is the freaking nice tank I'm planning to do a SHORT tutorial on (short because you'll probably get all the trick wile texturing it  )

http://goliath.e3b.org/Host/Mammouth%20Tank.rar

If you have any problems to download the file, just send me hates email with tons of insults and il quickly give you some links to others file hosts.[/url]

[EDIT]I've just corrected the link.... you shall donwload the file again if you still have my first messed up version[/EDIT]

*sighs*

This is already proving to be 'fun'

I'm attempting to follow the posted Blender's Unwrap tutorial, but I'm not finding the 'UV Face Select mode'

Here's what I got available:

Image

This challenge I think will really try my patience. I'll be lucky if I can get a cube mapped.

Oh, and btw - Congrats on the win Goliath.

@Damascus: The problem is that in the latest versions of Blender the "UV face select" mode have been integrated with Edit mode.
So to unwrap your model simply "tab" in to edit mode, select all with "A" and press the "U" key to bring up the unwrap options.

What goes on from there is still very new to me. I really hope this challenge will improve on this.

@Goliath: Congrats on the win :D

heemmm..... sorry for that but.... if you downloaded the file i've uploaded yesterday, you may download the new version...

http://goliath.e3b.org/Host/Mammouth%20Tank.rar
(The link in the post above was corrected too )

I noticed an extremely strange bug in the last version... witch was making us unable to texture the "Track sheild...name that as you want..." and few other part.... also, some of the parts (like the body) were not adapted to the UV mapping... also, some object had all their face pointing in wrong direction.... oups....of course, everything is corrected.... and I made a test to be sure everthing allow the texture mapping :

Image
Image
You can even map the tracks and the antennas !
...Witch I hope you will does crazy challengers !

I'm sorry for that folks, you can put your weapons down, my Mammoth Tank is fixed and ready to rule again !

PS (Yeah, A big "Post scriptum" this time hehehe):
Damascus... or anyone else haveing trouble
with this challenge may "Read"...or just take
a look at the following help, it shall ecplain
you how to get starting with texuring your tanks:

1)-First, select one of the object part, go in edit mode (TAB key),
-Select everything (A key)
-pess "U" key to open the UV menu
-Choose the option you want.... you might try them all if it is new to you...
...though I almost alway use the last one "Unwrap SMART PROJECTIONS"

Image

2)-Now that your faces are positionned in a 2D paintable way, you still need to include them into a picture to be able to draw on them. Each face can have his own picture... but in our case, the entire object's faces will share the same picture. To include them into a picture, keep all face selected and create a new image.
Image

3)-Blender have his own poor drawing tool.... but you may prefer export your layout to edit it in another crapy software... SO, to do this, simply do this :
Image

4)-The saved file contain the boundary of each face. This is damn cool for editing... but it could mess up your final texture so, what I suggest is to use a drawing software that allow the use of diferent layer (Like gimp or Pain.net witch is also pretty good..and simple) put the exported blender's image in the first background layer and draw your funny textures on the layers above. when finished, delete the first layer (Or fill it blank if your crap don't allow you to delete the first laye) so you will have a pretty nice looking texture witouth the boundary showing on your tank's texture.... witch could be a bit artistic though.....
Image

5)-When your darwing is finished, save it in the format you want (I use PNG but you can use what you want because blender support lot of formats)
-In blender, In edit mode and with all faces still selected, open the saved picture you did.
Image

6)-Wile your cursor is over the 3D window, press ALT+Z and
WOW pretty nice but.... Hey ? WTF ? Nothing is on the render ?
Image

... That's because there is still one step remaining : you'll have to tell blender you want the faces of your mesh to use your pic for the texture instead of blender-materials. to do that, simply add a new material... if the object does not already have one.... and press the "TEXTURE" button:
Image

7)-Note that even if you do that, blender's freaking nice materials option like "MIROR/TRANSPARANT" effects will still be enabled :
EVEN MORE FREAKING COOL !

...though you may turn that of wile editing your texture because it will slow down your render speed.
also, For the last challenge, I used blender AO (Abiant Oclusion).... a REALLY nice fonction ... and easy one also... but it is slowering the render even more than the mirror effect so you may turn that off too.
Image

HAVE FUN FOLKS !

And, please, stop fighting with your Mammoth Tanks and start painting them hehehehhehe....

PPS: PLEASE Dan_Hin, could you give a vague deadline about the challenge ? This is somthing I really missed with the last challenge hehe....

Heee..... sorry, I missunderstood your problem.... my english again...

I'm sorry I cannot help you if you have scripts issues.... though this script is working fine with blender 2.48 on windows....

If you want, I can give you the unwrap files....

....but I think it would be a bit to near with cheating.... though you seem to be experiencing a tough bug...

****

O crap.... sorry, il crompress that with winrar instead.... oups again...

No worries.
