BU Wallpaper

OK

as some of you already know, I wanted to create a special Blender Underground wallpaper that will be downloadable for everyone. Actually this thread was supposed to be the first in a new category called "teamworks" or "interactive projects", but because this category probably will never be created, I don't want to wait for it.

the Idea:
We (PNG_Pyro said he's with me) want to build a set, where EVERYONE OF YOU can add one special Item, that can be associated with your account. These Items don't have to be anything big, actually we prefer a small object, that will be put into our set. In most cases, it is the best Idea to send something from your profiles signature.
If you cant send an object of your signature, like me, think of something, that may still be fitting (I'm trying to create a medallion, of a moon someway).

to upload your files, you can use whatever host you like. google for free file host to get a list of them (I use 4shared.com)
your scene don't need lighting, cameras, or any special render setting, they only need the meshes, materials and textures.

IMPORTANT:
if you are using image textures, don't forget to pack them into your .blend file

to do so, go to user preferences -> file -> external data -> pack into .blend file.

Image

The set:
for our wallpaper we need a scene, that fits to our underground image, but still doesn't look sad or dirty or like we're all mutants.

I have already started a concept and would like to hear some suggestions.
(I'd like to get a better texture of our banner, so I don't have to use this temporary faked  )

here's the scene with the models we got so far:
Update January 18th 2010
Update January 23rd 2010
Update February 17th 2010
Update March 31st 2010
Image

The Items, that will be laying on the ground will get extra lighting of course and the camera angle will be adjusted depending on your Avatars

I hope to get some Ideas from you, and of course the items.

yeah. your one of the problematic users :D

ähm I guess the signature is a picture of you? How about a smiley coin with your initials? hmm perhaps not

well because of your experience in organic modeling you could do a little puppet like a caricature of your person. That could look quite nice. Like a sackboy :D

Same here. I want to contribute, but I don't have any idea.

Well, we're all a community of people who are on the internet, and so it doesn't matter what we look like, what matters is what we have to contribute to the community. We are represented by our avatars, and so I think that we should each design a character, be it simple/complex, realistic/cartoony, human/object, but I think it should be a character, as a way of representing us all being a diverse group who have come together.

With objects, people may just miss out bits, whereas characters have personality, even if they are only a box with eyes. Maybe a layout like this? :D

Jotoonkid; actual characters are a bit difficult for some of us. That is why we went with the idea of simple objects. If you want to contribute a charachter, please do, (maybe as an action figure?) but I don't think we should expect everyone else to do so. I know I couldn't easily model a character.

Things that could be contributed (off the top of my head) Pens, mugs, coasters, knives, guns, sculptures, keys, crystals, spaceships, paperweights, bowls, artifacts, tattoos, fruit, cards, plants, knick-nacks, anything at all! As long as it's fairly interesting and fairly small, so we can fit it in our scene.

If you want people to know who it's from, put your name on it; if you don't, then just hand it to us, and we'll try and make something interesting out of all of them.

That's the Idea I hadat the beginning :D

recently (while I was reading about the blenderunderground banner and stuff like this) I've had an idea of making a very special wallpaper.

I wanted to use a basic mesh of a human figure in cartoon style/proportions and then make a lot of copies which will be transformed into the more or less active members of this Forum. For this reason I started to write down some notes about you to get a nice Idea how I should pose your avatar into my scene. (like Hamsterhill with the cylinder, Ninja Krow with some nice fitting equipment next to Goliath (Goliath is playing Computer games) because of their cooperation, Charlydontsurf with his cowboyhat, Steve Cameron using sequence editor and has a fly-puppet on his desk etc. etc. :D

The set would be a big dark (lot of small lights built into the floor) disco-like room with (...)

at the end I hoped to get a nice blenderunderground wallpaper, which I would have sent to an agent, so that he could share it on this site and I could surprise you 8)

after some time this project came to halt before it really got started. it would need a lot of time to make it, and there are so many other things I wanted to do.

do you think, it could work if everyone joined this project?

that's what I said.

Yeah, I know that, organics are hard to do, but characters don't have to be organic. I mean, you just give a pen eyes and feet and its a character.

If you can think of a fairly simple object that you would like to have in the collage, I'd be happy to model it for you.

I'm not particularly good at organics, though; just so you know.

@Jtoon; I see what you mean! Yeah, people could model characters. Although I don't think we should require it, because neither Werewolf or I were planning on making a character.

lol she hit a point
besides, as I said, first I wanted to model characters for everyone all by myself and you have also been on my list Jotoonkid :D with a character with brown very long hair. :D

and to everyone who thinks, he/she is not active enough, who cares? It's not like we had to pay the rent for the 3d space your model takes!
Take a look at the set. Enough space for everyone :D

if you are registered, you own your space, and I hope, that sooner or later EVERY ACTIVE member has joined. That is why I like the Idea of PNG not to model a full character, but maybe to send in something you already have. Now some of you can't just say: "I'm to busy", or they have to admit, that they didn't make their signiture. 8)

Ps: I've (will) updated the set. You know that I like texturing so I couldn't let this sign look so pathetically unfinished
