When I googled it I found something for the material:
http://www.blender.org/development/rele ... lend-type/

But how can I make the blade itself?

Thanks

  • Shift-A -> add Circle (toolshelf: filled, 2*x vertices, e.g. x = 16)
  • Go to edit mode and select all but middle vertex
  • Go to "Select" in the panel under your 3d view and choose "Every N number of Verts" (toolshelf: 2)
(if you want to do it manually, you can also select every second ring vertex by hand)
  • Scale the selected vertices inwardly to the desired depth of the saw teeth
  • Slightly rotate the selected vertices around the normal axis of the blade for the twist of the saw teeth
  • render

Hope your output is a saw blade. At least, mine is. :)

Edit: I forgot the hole in the middle. For this you can use Loop-Cut on the circle, scale it down to the hole size and eventually remove the center vertex.

Thank you for the detailed instruction. It works :-)
I couldn't get the loop in the middle. I tried Ctrl + r. But it didn't work.

Yeah, you're right, it doesn't work with loop-cut. Two ways for achieving it:

  • You need to select everything, press and hold "k" for cut and with your left mouse button held down, you draw a closed circle around the center vertex. No need to be exact, because after it, you change the type to "MidPoints" in the tool shelf.
  • Alternatively, you can switch to edge-select mode and select all edges inside the circle and then press "w" to bring up the specials menu and choose "Subdivide".

Now you have a new ring of vertices. You can scale them like you want and then remove the center vertex.

Another option would be to start with the circle not filled and select all vertices, extrude, then scale inwards.

There are many ways of achieving this. Reverend just pointed out another method. Choose whatever you feel comfortable with and what fits in your situation. :)

I tried to use several vertices to shape a tooth. Now I'm facing following problems:
1) I couldn't figure out how to change the N-th selection. It always selects the same vertices.
2) I want to rotate the tip of the tooth a little bit more, i.e. like a hook. Can I select the N-th edges and extrude? or any other better suggestions?

Yeah, i think that is the way it works. If you need to select the others you can invert the selection. In the select option under your 3d view, you can choose "inverse" (or press CTRL+I).

Extrude is the way to go. :)

I'm trying to use 4 vertices per tooth. After an inverse 3 vertices are selected. If I do another N-th select it only works on one 3 vertices group :-(
Can I somehow rotate the origin and make the N-th selection starting at a different vertex?

Not that I am aware of. I think this option has something to do with Blenders internal vertex sorting. But it only takes the selected vertices into account and so it is rather a "deselect every nth vertex" function in my opinion.

If you need more help, please don't hesitate to ask and maybe you can show a screen shot of your current saw blade, so we can see what you are at more easily.

I was away from this project for quite sometime. Now I'm back :-)
Now I can make the blade if I select the vertexes manually. The problem is if I want to in crease the number of teeth then for each small adjustment I've to do the selection again :-(
I wish I can offset the Nth selection.
I also noticed another issue. I don't know how the algorithm works. The 3rd selection is not working as I wish.

Sorry about the terrible color. I don't know why webshots did that.
The distance between 2 marked edges at the top & bottom of the circle is not 2.

Are you selecting edges or vertices? Looks to me that you are in the edge selection mode.

Try it this way:
Quote:
* Go to edit mode and select all BUT middle vertex (just the outer ring)
* Go to "Select" in the panel under your 3d view and choose "Every N number of Verts" (toolshelf: 2)

You are absolutely right. The plugin is not designed for edges, hehehe...
I'm writing my own script for that. Still in learning process :-)
