You use either the link or the append option to use a .blend file, not the import option.

Link – (shortcut ctrl-alt-O). This allows you to link to an object in another .blend file. With this option, the linked object is not loaded into the .blend file, nor is it separate. If you make a change to the object in the original file, that change will affect any linked object as well. Also, if you send the .blend file with the linked object to another computer without the linked .blend file, that object will not be there on that other computer.

Append – (shortcut shift-F1). This function is very similar to the Link function. The difference is that it creates an independent copy of the object you append from another .blend file. This means the appended object will not be affected if you change the original object. Also, the appended object is now part of the current .blend file. This does make the file a little larger.

Hope that helps.

The correct menu item for that is "Append". Press Shift- F1.
You might also wish to move anything in the exact center off to one side.
Happy modelling !
