Here is a very handy little tip that I just discovered today which I could've used sooo many times in the past.

Let's say you're editing just one face, and you want to move just one or two vertices along the same plane as the face but the face isn't flat on an X, Y or Z (zed) plane. You'll just have to line it up as best you can by eye, won't you?

NO!!!!! THAT'S JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!

You can align the current view to the selection by pressing [NUMPAD *].

Try it! Select a whole object, rotate it in object mode to some odd or awkward angle and press [NUMPAD *].

Select some vertices that make up a face and press [NUMPAD *].

C'est wicked, innit?

For some extra orientation and views help, a new feature is in View, Transform orientation.

Any tips for this in 2.5? I just downloaded the latest release and '*', shift-NUM1,NUM3 doesn't change anything. shift-NUM7 appears to zoom out a bit.

Perhaps there's a script I could use? I would like to be able to align the view to a selected normal. Wether it's a face normal view or transformation normal.

thx. :D

Gretter,
to get the opposite view to numpad 1 in 2.5 you press CTRL-numpad 1 and same thing for other views.
Aligning a view to a face is the numpad * I think.
:D

The numpad * shortcut to align view to selected is currently unavailable in 2.5x
What they've done instead is made all of the numpad view keys (numpad 1, 3 and 7) work to view selected by pressing them with shift.

So, shift+numpad 1 will view the selection from its front. shift+numpad 7 will view the selection from its top. Additionally, ctrl still works for the reverse. Shift+Ctrl+numpad 7 views the selection from it's bottom.

Hope that helps.

Definitely helped me, Dave.
The first 3D ware I ever used had that option - but since I didn't use it much I have not missed it.
